Is Steve Jobs Ignoring History, Or Trying to Rewrite It?

Very few people get the chance to makeit is a book for you history. Even fewer get the chance to make it twice. Perhaps that is why it is so fascinating to watch Steve Jobs as he tries to usher in the era of mobile touch computing today, just as he ushered in the era of the personal computer three decades ago. But I wonder whether he is repeating the very same mistakes which relegated Macs to a niche market. Or did he learn from those mistakes so that Apple (AAPL) comes out on top this time? heart rules
Jobs is once again pitting Apple’s complete product design mastery against the rest of the industry, except this time he thinks Words to Live byhe will prevail. Whether it is his repeated moves to keep Adobe’s Flash off the iPhone or his growing rift with Google (GOOG) over Android, Jobs is making the iPhonestrat things up again and iPad a relatively closed system that Apple can control. All apps need to be approved by Apple, the ads shown on the apps will also start to go through Apple, and no matter I am in the worng worldhow hard Adobe tries to open up the iPhone to its Flash developers Apple will keep blocking all its efforts.Developers and pundits can cry foul all they want about Apple’s lack of openness. But remember, companies are only open when it is convenient for them. The fight with Adobe has always been about making developers play by Apple’s rules. And right now they can make those rules because they have all the customers. In the desktop era, Windows had the most apps, which translated directly into sales. Today on mobile, the iPhone has the most apps and Jobs wants to keep it that way. Allowing Adobe (ADBE) or Microsoft (MSFT) to port apps developed for other devices to the iPhone devalues the iPhone, which is why Apple is cracking down so hard on Adobe. It is not about Flash, it is about developers. As John Gruber The App Store platform could turn into a long-term de facto standard platform. That’s how Microsoft became Microsoft. At a certain point developers wrote apps for Windows because so many users were on Windows and users bought Windows PCs because all the software was being written for Windows. That’s the sort of situation that creates a license to print money.
But how long will that license last? The iPhone faces a growing threat from Google’s Android phones, which are the PCs of the mobile world. Only Apple makes the iPhone, but many phone manufacturers make Android phones just like many PC makers produce Windows PCs. Slowly but surely, those Android phones are getting better. And already Android sales are collectively catching up to iPhone sales.
Of all people, surely he sees what is coming. Is he ignoring his own history, or does he know it so well that this time he is going to try to rewrite it by changing the outcome? As long as the iPhone remains the leading smartphone, he can try to lock out Google’s ads and lock in developers with their apps (and, by extension, customers who want those apps).
Still, it seems like history could repeat itself, with the rest of the industry closing the innovation gap with Apple fast. With Google subsidizing the mobile OS, other phone manufacturers have an economic advantage as well. Jobs is trying everything he can to hold back the Android advance, including suing HTC, the largest manufacturer of Android phones. He is fighting Google with everything he’s got—undercutting Google’s pending acquisition of AdMob by entering the mobile advertising market and creating fear among Android partners with his patent lawsuit.
In the end, it is the victors who write history. Right now, Jobs is winning. Can he keep winning or is history against him?http://www.bostonreefers.org/forums

Cash Crunch Will Force Governments to Do Less

In Los Angeles this week, the look at yourselfmayor proposed closing most city offices for two days a week. In Colorado Springs, private donations and bake sales are being used to keep parks and pools open. In Maryland, the state is considering furloughing state workers for the second year in a row.
Welcome to the era of government little boydoing less for its citizens. The wave is beginning at the state and local level, where it's rolling ahead in large measure because of a fiscal crunch brought on by the deep recession. But there's little reason to think it will stop with states and cities, and ample reason to think it will never stopcontinue even after the recession fades. The federal government is headed in the same direction, as Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke warned on Wednesday. In a speech in Dallas, Mr. Bernanke bluntly noted that two giant fiscal waves were headed for the federal government, my softwareone atop the other. First comes the big deficit caused by the economic downturn. That will be followed immediately by ballooning costs for baby-boom retirees drawing I miss my homeSocial Security and Medicare funds. "To avoid large and unsustainable budget deficits, the nation will ultimately have to choose among higher taxes, modifications to entitlement programs such as Social Security and Medicare, less spending on everything else from education to defense, or some combination of the above," Mr. Bernanke said.
Everybody who's honest about this problem knows the answer inevitably will be "some combination of the above." This is the reality of the 21st century, and as a consequence the country faces some big decisions about the shape of government, and government itself will have to show it's being more efficient. The issues raised aren't so much ideological ones -- is government good or bad? -- but practical and political. There is a growing disconnect between the services Americans want and the taxes they are prepared to pay for them.
This is relatively new terrain. For most of the last century, as America grew and prospered, its citizens have happily grown accustomed to the government -- federal, state and local combined -- providing steadily more services: better roads, more aid to colleges and universities, research labs and health benefits for a wider circle of citizens. This has been true through political regimes of both parties, and despite rhetoric to the contrary. Lyndon Johnson provided guns for Vietnam as well as more butter for citizens as home. Ronald Reagan talked about cutting the size of government, but never really did. Bill Clinton said the era of big government was over, but it wasn't really. George W. Bush was a conservative who pushed through a giant new drug benefit for senior citizens and steady increases in other domestic spending.

Prayers prevail despite court ruling

Defiance tinged National Day of Prayer gatherings Thursday as participants decried a court ruling last month that the annual event is unconstitutional.
t a breakfast here, committee chair Marj Mokry welcomed 250 people with a prayer of thanks "for the freedom to gather in prayer." Yolanda Fields, 29, director of Breakthrough Urban Ministries, said the court ruling "feels pretty bad, because this country was founded on prayer."
On the steps of the Stearns County Courthouse in St. Cloud, Minn., Mark Johnson, a senior pastor at Jubilee Worship Center, told about 200 people, "We should not take it for granted, this opportunity we have, because the National Day of Prayer is under attack."
U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb ruled April 15 that the National Day of Prayer, created by Congress in 1952, amounts to a call for religious action. Enforcement is suspended pending an appeal by the Justice Department. The case was initiated by the Freedom From Religion Foundation, a Madison, Wis., group that argues the events violate the separation of church and state.
FRANKLIN GRAHAM: Soldiers on, prays at Pentagon
The National Day of Prayer "is totally unconstitutional and it's un-American," said Annie Laurie Gaylor, a co-president of the foundation. Proponents use the annual events "to unite religion and government," she said.
Dozens of people attended an anti-day of prayer rally on the steps of the Wisconsin Capitol in Madison. Signs included "Obama cannot tell me to pray" and "Nothing fails like prayer."
A USA TODAY/Gallup Poll found that 57% of Americans favored having a National Day of Prayer, 5% opposed it and 38% said it doesn't matter. The poll taken May 1-2 had an error magin of +/- 5 percentage points.
Emily Jones was among 150 people at a prayer breakfast in Prattville, Ala. "During these times we need more prayer, not less," she said. "No one at city hall is ordering us to come down here and pray."the strings of the lingering heart
